Gene Autry

Remembering Gene Autry

Grab your spurs and your boots!  Get your hat and your horse!

Its time to SADDLE UP with one of Oklahoma’s favorite sons who
became part of Americana.    Orvon Grover Autry was born in 1907 to a poor family that moved from one small Oklahoma town to another.   But Orvon had talent with a song and guitar and perhaps more important…he had what his fans like to call “gumption”.    Orvon became Oklahoma’s Yodeling Cowboy and changed his name to something that might be a little more familiar….Gene Autry.

Through the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s Gene Autry was a hero on the big screen as well as on radio and television, in the recording industry and as a live performer in rodeos.   To this day he is the only person to have 5 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Nearly a decade after his death the legend of Gene Autry lives on.   If you don’t believe us, then join us in November for a special edition of OETA’S arts and entertainment documentary series, Gallery.    We’ll take you to a small Oklahoma town that has become a favorite annual pilgrimage site for hundreds of Autry fans from all over the country.
